Now that it’s starting to cool down here in London, I’m sure you’re thinking about how to catch some winter sun. There aren’t too many destinations within a few hours of London that are still warm and glorious this time of year. But, Marrakech is definitely one of them.
Marrakech in Morocco is just 3.5 hours from London and there are lots of direct flights. Marrakech is one of my favourite short haul winter destinations because of this. It’s also a city full of beautiful architecture, history, food and shopping. You can go to Marrakech and spend your days by the pool or in the many luxurious spas, or you can walk around the medina getting lost or head into the Atlas Mountains for a little adventure.
Today I’m sharing one of my favourite boutique hotels with you. And after looking through the photos, I’m sure you’ll want to book a flight out there straight away!
Firstly, lets talk about the different options for accommodation in Marrakech. There are 100s of different options, but my biggest piece of advice for choosing where to stay in Marrakech is don’t stay in the heart of the medina. Its a maze, very busy and noisy and it can be hard to find calm. Stay somewhere around the medina walls or just outside. This way you get best of both worlds – you are close to the souks for shopping and exploring but you get a bit more breathing space, it’ll be easier to find your way home and it’s also easier to get to the new town of Marrakech (Gueliz and Ville Nouvelle in particular are worth checking out).
My second tip is to choose a Riad. A Riad is a large traditional house built around a central courtyard which has been converted into accommodation. They are small, beautiful and full of character. And there are some incredibly luxurious ones that you won’t want to leave.
Let me introduce to you El Fenn.
Located on the medina walls El Fenn is a luxury boutique riad full of incredible art.
Owned by Vanessa Branson (brother of Richard) and Howell James, El Fenn has 28 individually designed rooms, 3 pools, a very good restaurant, roof terrace and a tranquil luxury spa. There is also an annex building with 4 rooms that can be hired exclusively. The work that has gone into the design is outstanding, and no wonder that in 2014 El Fenn was voted number one out of 950 hotels to win the prestigious Mr & Mrs Smith award for Best Dressed Hotel.
This is a super chic hotel full of hidden corners where you can rest with a book or just with your thoughts. There are lots of luscious courtyards and wide corridors filled with armchairs. It’s said to have one of the best rooftops in Marrakech and I can agree, it’s beautiful up there. Its a mini paradise in a bustling city.
Every morning you awake to fresh tea and coffee outside your room to start your day, and of course, the staff and service is second to none. El Fenn is a home away from home and the perfect base to explore Marrakech from.
