Starting your own online business as a Virtual Assistant or service provider - what you actually need when you start out

What you need to start your own online business as a virtual assistant. A table with a coffee, laptop and notepad on.

The allure of breaking free from the traditional 9 to 5 grind is powerful. The dreams of having a flexible work schedule, achieving that elusive work-life balance, and potentially being able to work from anywhere are no longer distant dreams—they're viable realities.

I don’t believe it’s overly complex to start your own online business, but you do need to get clear on a few things first and you’ll need the three essential items I list below, to get you started.

1. Understanding your 'why'

Every transformational journey begins with understanding your purpose. Changing career or starting your own business is a big event for anyone. I know because I’ve been there too. So think about why you want to leave your 9 to 5? Is it for more flexibility, to be around for your kids, or maybe to pursue a passion, like that daily swim at lunchtime? Recognising your "why" will not only keep you anchored during challenging times but it will also help you tailor your online services to your lifestyle aspirations. I’m all about consciously building a life by design.

2. Pinpoint your skills and services

What services can you offer as a online service provider or Virtual Assistant? Perhaps you have a flair for social media, a knack for organisation, or an eye for design. Start by listing down all your skills. Remember, every online business or entrepreneur has varied needs, from email management, to business administration, or content creation, event planning and more. The clearer you are about your offerings, the easier it'll be to market yourself.

3. Carve out your niche

One of the key challenges online services providers and VAs face is confidence, especially in a vast online world. By identifying a niche or specialised service, you set yourself apart. This not only boosts your confidence but also makes it easier to attract your ideal client. Remember, specificity can be a potent tool to stand out in the market.

4. Setting the foundation: operations and administration

I have seen through my journey of working across various businesses, the essence of success remains the same: robust operations and administration. Draft clear contracts, set up an invoicing system, and decide on your channels of communication. These foundational elements ensure the seamless functioning of your online business.

5. Marketing and building a client base

Building a client base is often the most nerve-wracking aspect of starting. My advice? Begin by showcasing your expertise. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are fabulous for visual representation. LinkedIn is a great way to show your previous work experience and education. Share tips, client testimonials, and your personal journey. Engaging content combined with consistent posting will do wonders. Also, word of mouth is one of the best marketing tools. Tell everyone you meet what you do - you never know who could need your skills!

6. Seeking mentorship and guidance

When I began mentoring, it was with a singular vision—to shorten the learning curve for aspiring VAs and online service providers. If you feel overwhelmed, consider seeking guidance. Whether it's through one-on-one mentorship, downloadable resources, or short courses, investing in knowledge can be a game-changer and allow you to jump timelines.

Three essential items you need to actually start your online business

Yes, you need to follow the steps above when starting your business. Following the steps will bring you clarity, and clarity becomes action and action creates the changes needed to reach your goals.

But then, all you really need is a laptop, smart phone and good wifi!

Seriously. These are the three essential items you need as a Virtual Assistant or online service provider.

As you and your business grow you might start to invest in things like a home office or co-working space, or getting an expert to help with branding, but these are nice to haves, not necessities.

The start up costs for an online service based business really are incredibly low, making it low risk! Especially if you can start working on your business and signing clients before you need to leave your 9 to 5 job.

Breaking free from traditional ideas and embarking on an online business journey, especially as a VA, is a blend of passion, skill, and strategy.

It's about building a life by design, where work complements life, rather than consuming it. The road might seem daunting, but remember, each step brings you closer to achieving a balance that suits you perfectly. So, why wait?
