How I built a thriving VA business without Instagram

One of the most rewarding aspects of running your own Virtual Assistant business is the ability to align your work with your personal values and goals. For me, a big part of my "why" is my family. I wanted the freedom to be present for my daughter, to have the flexibility to spend quality time with her, and to create a lifestyle that accommodates our needs and dreams.

That’s why school holidays have become a joyful time for me, I get to spend extra time with my daughter, I’m not filled with dread of all the extra wrap around care that would be needed if I was still in my 9 to 5.

Getting clear on your "why" is crucial. It becomes your compass, your North Star. When you face challenges and feel overwhelmed, your "why" will guide you and remind you of the reasons you're on this journey. It's the driving force that keeps you motivated and focused.

How can you build this kind of VA business too?

I often get asked how I managed to build a successful Virtual Assistant business without relying on Instagram. Well, the truth is, there are many ways to attract clients and grow your business that don't involve endless scrolling and posting.

When I first started my VA business, I quickly realised that spending hours on Instagram wasn't the most effective use of my time. Instead, I focused on strategies that played to my strengths and allowed me to connect with clients on a more personal level.

1. Leverage your network

Your network is a goldmine for potential clients. I reached out to former colleagues, friends, and acquaintances, sharing my new VA business and asking for referrals. It's amazing how many leads you can generate just by talking to people you already know.

2. Attend industry events

Attending webinars and local business events was a game-changer. These events provided opportunities to network, learn, and showcase my expertise. I got my third and fourth client from an Instagram course I signed up for - it was full of busy business owners. I made sure to connect with everyone on the course and because I nurtured those relationships, I even got two more clients years down the line!

3. Create valuable content

No, I didn't spend my life on IG, but I did focus on creating some cornerstone high-quality content for my blog, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. This way, I could let my existing network know what I was up to, and they could share my content with their own networks.

4. Direct outreach

Sometimes, you have to go directly to the source. I researched and identified businesses that could benefit from my services and reached out to them with personalised messages. My first client was the result of a message I sent on LinkedIn. An old colleague shared a contact's new business venture, I clicked on it and LOVED the branding of their website, so I sent the owner a message saying so. It so happened she was looking for a marketing assistant, which is my skill set, and we still work together to this day!

By implementing these strategies, I was able to build a thriving VA business without spending all my time on Instagram. If you're looking to start or grow your VA business, remember that there are many paths to success. Find what works for you and most importantly, stay consistent with your efforts.
